Over 6,000 North Korean troops have reportedly been killed or wounded in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, according to a June 15 update from the UK Ministry of Defense. Despite the losses, North Korea is sending 6,000 more—1,000 sappers and 5,000 construction workers—to support Russian military efforts and rebuild infrastructure in the war-torn region.
North Korea began deploying troops to Russia in October 2024, and experts estimate 11,000 to 14,000 have served there to date. Sources say Pyongyang is receiving significant financial and military support from Moscow in return. The deployment continues amid rising concerns in South Korea and Japan over the deepening alliance between the two authoritarian regimes.
