Public transport operators in Kenya have suspended a nationwide strike for one week to allow consultations with the government, marking an end to two days of protests that left at least four people dead and more than 30 others injured.
According to Associated Press talks collapsed on Monday as transport operators demanded that fuel prices be reduced to cushion them and commuters from increased transportation costs.
Commuters were stranded for the second consecutive day on Tuesday as public transport operators kept their vehicles off the roads.
Protesters took to the streets, engaging police in running battles and setting tires on fire along major highways, making them impassable.
On Wednesday, residents of the capital explained how the strike had affected them.
"The two-day protest has negatively affected us as Kenyans as there was no usual activity within the central business district and the government was not bale to collect taxes," said Benard Onyango, a resident of Nairobi. "We are appealing for a reduction in fuel costs as the commodity is used by both the rich and poor."
Emily Otuoma, another resident, expressed her displeasure at the inconvenience caused by the two-day strike.
"I am not happy as I have not been able to work properly and my children have not been able to go to school due to lack of transport," she said.
The government attributed the latest price increase to the Iran war and its effects on energy supplies.
The opposition, however, blamed the sharp rise on corrupt businesspeople who want to increase profit margins.
