The Pentagon’s new National Defense Strategy released on Friday says Washington will provide “more limited” support to allies, pressing partners in Europe and Asia to take greater responsibility for their own defense. The shift reflects a reordering of U.S. security priorities, with protecting the American homeland and Western Hemisphere now ranked above confronting China.
Following the release of the Pentagon’s new defense strategy, questions arose regarding the involvement of the White House in defending the world outside of the Western Hemisphere, primarily Europe. Speaking to TVP World Daniel Hamilton, President of the Transatlantic Leadership Network said that despite mixed signals from Washington, the U.S. is “still very engaged in Europe.”
Earlier this week, President Trump’s remarks suggesting that allied forces had remained “off the front lines” drew widespread condemnation across Europe, with leaders and veterans emphasizing the heavy human cost borne by NATO allies during the war. Among those responding critically was Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who issued a public rebuke of Trump despite the traditionally cordial relations between the two leaders.
