Associated Press’s Mark Vancleave reports from Los Angeles on the reaction to President Trump’s escalation in immigration enforcement.
For the past five days, hundreds of protesters have been flooding the streets around downtown, demanding an end to the crackdown.
When you’re in the crowd you can really see the pain and anger on people’s faces. For many folks it’s their friends, their neighbors, their loved ones that are now being targeted for deportation by ICE.
You have these scenes where protesters will face-off in the street with police carrying crowd control munitions and batons and they’ll call out the officers with Hispanic last names and ask them what their abuelas, what their grandmothers would say about them standing on the opposite side of the protest line.
The confrontations really tend to become more hostile when the police use crowd control munitions to push protesters away from the Federal Building and city hall.
The mayor imposed an 8pm curfew for the downtown area, which has seen sporadic looting late at night. Despite a handful of arrests for violent actions, most have been for failure to disperse or violations of that curfew.
But protesters are still gathering at the Federal Building, many carrying American flags, Mexican flags and those of other South and Central American countries–all demanding an end to the deportations.
