The Turkish vessel M/T Mersin, carrying a large cargo of Russian-origin oil, was allegedly targeted by Ukrainian drones near the Senegalese coast, according to the Deniz Haber news agency.
As specified in the report, the crew of the oil tanker transmitted a distress signal while in the designated area. The attack caused a hole in the hull, and seawater began filling the engine room, creating a real risk of loss of buoyancy and potential sinking of the ship.
Senegalese rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the scene to evacuate people and assess the feasibility of towing. Official authorities have not yet commented on the incident.
The M/T Mersin, with its impressive dimensions of 183 meters in length and 32 meters in width, can carry up to 50,000 tons of cargo. Built in 2009, it is registered under the Panamanian flag. According to monitoring data, the tanker visited the Russian port of Taman in August 2025, after which it headed for the African coast, where it remained in a waiting state for a long time.
On November 28, the tankers Kairos and Virat, en route to Russia, were attacked by naval drones in the Black Sea . A fire broke out in the engine room of the Kairos, while the crew of the Virat reported hull damage, but no major fire was detected on board. The vessels in question were the Kairos and Virat, both Gambian- flagged . The Virat was struck approximately 35 nautical miles off the coast of Turkey. There were 20 crew members on board, all in satisfactory condition. The tanker Kairos, en route from Egypt , may have struck a naval mine. All 25 crew members were safely evacuated; there were no Russians among them.
Another drone attack on the Virat occurred on the morning of November 29. Consequently, Ankara expressed concern over the attacks on tankers, which posed a threat to human lives, shipping, and the environment.
Ukraine previously admitted involvement in the attack on tankers off the coast of Turkey. The operation was reportedly carried out jointly by the Security Service of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Navy. Ukrainian media claim the attacked vessels are part of the so-called "shadow fleet" used by Russia.
