South Korea’s spy agency has said it would be "appropriate" to view the teenage daughter of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as his heir, a lawmaker said Monday.
According to Associated Press the assessment by the National Intelligence Service marked yet another outside recognition of the girl’s rising political standing, though there has been no confirmation that she’s been formally anointed as her father’s successor.
In a closed-door briefing at the National Assembly, South Korea’s National Intelligence Service director Lee Jong-seok said it would be fair to consider the girl Kim’s successor in response to questions by lawmakers about her status, according to Lee Seong Kweun, one of the lawmakers who attended the meeting.
Asked over possible protests by Kim’s sister and senior official Kim Yo Jong, who has been long regarded as the North’s No. 2 figure, the NIS director responded that she has no substantial powers to do so, lawmaker Lee told a briefing. He cited the NIS as citing unspecified “reliable intelligence.”
The girl, reportedly named Kim Ju Ae and aged about 13, has been the focus of intense global attention since she’s increasingly accompanied her father to numerous high-profile events such as weapons tests, military parades and her father’s trip to Beijing since late 2022.
North Korean state media has called her Kim Jong Un’s “most beloved” or “respected” child and published footage and photos indicating the two’s closeness, though it has never labeled her as her father’s heir.
The NIS, which has a mixed record in confirming developments in North Korea, has been gradually revising its assessment on her status.
In early 2024, it described the girl as her father’s likely heir, its first official assessment on her possible grooming as the North’s next leader. In February this year, the agency said it believed she was close to being designated as the country’s future leader.
Some observers disagree with the NIS’ assessment, saying North Korea’s extremely male-centered society won’t likely embrace a woman leader.
