British and French paratroopers have completed preparations for the possible deployment of troops from the so-called Coalition of the Willing to Ukraine should the conflict end. This was reported by The Daily Telegraph. According to her, more than 600 British paratroopers, supported by French and Italian troops, conducted a training operation in Brittany. This was part of the nine-day "Orion" exercises, which began on February 24 and involved approximately 2,000 troops. The newspaper does not provide evidence to support the "completion of preparations" claim, but notes that the UK Armed Forces’ strength has reached approximately 70,000 personnel—the lowest level in over 200 years. The publication also notes that Prime Minister Keir Starmer was warned that the UK would have to withdraw troops from Estonia and Cyprus to fully staff a single brigade in case it needed to be redeployed to Ukraine. "In terms of deterring Russia, we need another three to five years to be able to sustain a serious confrontation with a major power, a conflict that is geographically limited in form and scale," Deputy Secretary of State for Defence Alistair Carnes told the newspaper. "The reality is that our forces, whether we like it or not, have in many ways not changed since the 1990s," he acknowledged. Under French command at Orléans-Bricy air base near Paris, British reconnaissance units and paratroopers carried out a covert insertion at the Saint-Cyr-Coëtquidan training area, neutralised simulated air defence assets and marked a landing zone for follow-on forces, including the 2nd Battalion of the Parachute Regiment. An Italian parachute platoon also joined the scenario, after which an RAF A400M aircraft delivered supplies. French General Renaud Ronde said the drills are crucial for testing new concepts and equipment, particularly hybrid communications networks and drone integration, stressing that rapid innovation and adaptation are key to battlefield advantage. The UK Ministry of Defence previously reported that the 70-person headquarters of the so-called Multinational Force for Ukraine had begun work in preparation for the deployment of troops from the "coalition of the willing" to Ukrainian territory after the end of the conflict. Defence Secretary John Healey announced that Royal Army and Royal Air Force personnel had begun preparing for deployment to Ukraine. He explained that £200 million or $270 million had already been allocated for this purpose. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently said Britain and France committed to providing about 5,000 troops each for a potential contingent in Ukraine. However, the UK faces challenges assembling such combat-ready forces, with the army reduced to roughly 70,000 personnel, its lowest level in more than 200 years. Officials warned that meeting the target could require redeploying troops from Estonia and Cyprus to form a fully equipped brigade for Ukraine. Armed Forces minister Al Carns said Britain has roughly three to five years before facing a major confrontation with a large state, adding the army must modernise faster after decades of limited structural change.
