Clashes have erupted between anti-government protesters and security forces in Tehran’s Grand Bazaar as nationwide protests are growing. Video footage shared in social media shows security forces storm the market, fire tear gas at protestors, who chanted “Shame, Shame!” However, the riot police were forced to retreat inside Tehran’s Grand Bazaar after facing strong public resistance and chants from shopkeepers and civilians. Another video shared in social media shows merchants leaving the market and moving towards the street. According to reports, the use of tear gas in Tehran’s bazaars has been recorded before and the videos shared in social media confirmed these reports. Protesters and shop owners have stated that they had gathered in the bazaars and halted their activities, but the intervention of security forces escalated tensions. Protests are occurring in a number of cities, including Shahrekord, Isfahan, Shiraz, Yazdanshahr Najafabad, Manouchehri. Nationwide protests started in Iran in late December, due to high inflation, record depreciation of the national currency and job insecurity. The rallies that started in Tehran have now spread to at least 222 locations in 78 cities.
