For the first time in history, a British court has found two men guilty of spying for China.
This was reported by The Guardian.
The investigation established that they were monitoring Chinese dissidents currently residing in Britain.
They carried out these activities as part of China’s so-called ‘shadow police’ operations.
The men are 38-year-old Chi Leung ‘Peter’ Wai and 65-year-old Chung Biu Yuen, known as Bill, a former Hong Kong trade official. Both held dual citizenship—Chinese and British.
The men were convicted of “aiding foreign intelligence by conducting surveillance on targets” between December 2023 and May 2024.
Waya, who worked for the Border Force at Heathrow Airport and volunteered as a special constable in the city of London, was also found guilty of misusing Home Office databases.
Both defendants denied the charges, but the Old Bailey court in London found them guilty. Their final sentences will be announced at a later date. The men face up to 14 years in prison.
They are believed to be the first people convicted of spying for China in the United Kingdom.
It should be noted that the German Federal Ministry of Defence has imposed strict restrictions on the use of personal cell phones within the department due to the threat of espionage from China and Russia.
