In Ukraine, Colombian volunteers are trained from scratch, and they then fight in the ranks of the Ukrainian Defense Forces. Colombians have the opportunity to quickly integrate into the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The 47th separate mechanized brigade "Magura" reported this on Telegram.
"The project to attract foreign volunteers to the 47th Magura Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade is constantly expanding. With the help of state programs, they can quickly join the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. And in the 47th, they are all trained from the ground up—this includes teamwork, marksmanship, airdrops with M113s, and clearing trenches," the statement reads.
Meanwhile, while Colombian recruits are undergoing training at training grounds, their more experienced compatriots are retaking Ukrainian land from the occupiers in the Sumy region.
As reported, that approximately 2,000 Colombians were fighting in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. They arrived in Ukraine as contract soldiers.
Some foreigners serve in the International Legion, while others serve in regular infantry units. In addition to Colombians, the contingent also includes Chileans and Brazilians. They already crushed Russian units in battles in Ukraine’s Sumy region.
About 40% of the foreign fighters who arrived in Ukraine are from South America.
Incidentally, Mexican intelligence agencies previously warned Ukraine that some volunteers who joined the International Legion of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense may have ties to cartels . Martinez says directly that earning money at the front gives him the chance to buy land and return to Colombia with his family. Another fighter, Oliver, 37, returned to Ukraine for the second time:
"Partly because I enjoy it. Partly for financial reasons." South American soldiers most often serve in the infantry, a critically needed specialty due to chronic shortages on the front lines. After nearly four years of war, Ukraine is experiencing a shortage of mobilized personnel, and frequent rotations and the ability of foreign contract soldiers to terminate their contracts at any time complicate planning.
"My fighters are fulfilling their duties—and very successfully," says Commander "Musician," emphasizing that some Colombians stay for a few months, while others sign three-year contracts. "I try to convey to them that they are doing something great here," he adds.
Tactics and training for new recruits also cover combating cheap enemy drones: at the training ground, instructors train soldiers in shooting down drones—often a matter of survival on the front lines. "To reach a position today, you need skills to shoot down enemy drones. You have to be able to camouflage yourself, remain undetected, and move quickly," explains "Muzikant."
