8. Cruel Russian general boasted to wife about ears cut off by Ukrainians; his terrible torture machine
The investigative projects "Schemes" and "System" have obtained an archive of personal correspondence from Russian General Roman Demurchiev, who bragged to his family and colleagues about the torture, executions, and abuse of the bodies of Ukrainian soldiers, including those captured.
49-year-old Demurchiev is an active participant in the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Armed Forces. Journalists note that he is highly valued by the Russian authorities: he attended meetings with the high command and received awards. In 2023, Vladimir Putin promoted Demurchiev to the rank of major general.
Until at least December 2024, Demurchiev served as deputy commander of the Russian Federation’s 20th Combined Arms Army. There is no publicly available information about his current duty station.
As part of their investigation, journalists from Skhemy and Sistema examined the general’s archive of correspondence from 2022 to 2024, obtained from a source in the Ukrainian army. The archive contains not only messages but also videos and photos that testify to the torture and murder of Ukrainian soldiers.
Thus, in correspondence with his colleagues and his wife, the general repeatedly mentioned the severed ears of Ukrainian soldiers. As evidence of his claims, Demurchiev also shared photographs of severed ears. For example, he discussed this photo with his wife:
"And then what do we do with them?" his wife asks.
— I’ll put together a garland and give it to you.
— Like pig’s ears to beer.
– Yeah.
Demurchiev frequently discussed the treatment of prisoners of war with a military counterintelligence officer named Roman. In October 2023, the general asked him what to do with one of the captured Ukrainians—kill him or hand him over to Roman for torture. Demurchiev’s interlocutor ultimately took the prisoner. The Ukrainian mentioned in the correspondence returned home as a result of the exchange, and he confirmed that he had been severely beaten and tortured with electric shocks in captivity. Judging by the correspondence, Roman responded by sending prisoners and detainees to the general with requests to kill them.
In December 2024, Demurchiev discussed with his subordinates a video showing former prisoners capturing three Ukrainian soldiers and then beating them to death with entrenching tools. Correspondence shows that Demurchiev also reported the incident to his superior, General Oleg Mityaev, commander of the 20th Army, who ordered the former prisoners to be awarded.
Demurchiev, who commanded Chechen units at the time of these prisoners’ capture, expressed skepticism about the role of the Akhmat units in the events of October 18 in the Donetsk region. Sending a message to his comrade about the "capture of a stronghold," the division commander accompanied it with the following comment: "The scouts screwed everyone. Akhmat is licking his balls in anger."
In correspondence with his comrades, Demurchiev constantly complains about Chechen fighters, noting that they are no good, calling them "pennywisers and PR people," and emphasizing that "only Slavs show results." However, this attitude toward Chechen units didn’t prevent Demurchiev from receiving an order from Ramzan Kadyrov, in November 2023. "Gold, with diamonds," he describes the award in one of his correspondence. And literally on the day he received the order, he calls his division’s chief of staff with some life advice: "Don’t offend the Chechens. Give them artillery, tanks, and maybe you’ll become a hero of Chechnya."
