Russia suffered significant losses in Ukraine frontline in March, with the death toll among military personnel showing a dramatic increase. Thus, the total losses caused by Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, increased by 29 % compared to the previous month, Commander-in-Chief of Ukrainian Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi reported. The top commander said that Ukrainian defense forces continue to hold the strategic initiative on the battlefield and are actively preventing Russian troops from regaining the capacity to launch large-scale offensives. Syrskyi emphasized that Ukraine’s unmanned systems units have become a central element in sustaining battlefield pressure, describing them as responsible for some of the most intensive and effective strikes against Russian forces. He noted that for four consecutive months, beginning in December 2025, Ukrainian drone units have been eliminating more enemy personnel than Russia is able to recruit, indicating a persistent imbalance in battlefield attrition. He also reported that, on average, Ukrainian unmanned systems are now conducting over 11,000 combat missions per day. In March alone, the number of confirmed targets hit increased by 50% compared to February, surpassing 150,000 strikes. According to Syrskyi, Ukraine’s medium-range strike capabilities have also expanded, with nearly 350 operations conducted at distances of 30 to 120 kilometers into enemy-controlled territory. These strikes reportedly damaged or destroyed 143 logistics hubs and supply depots, 52 command centers, 20 energy and oil infrastructure facilities, and numerous additional military targets Another notable development, according to the Ukrainian military leadership, was a 26% rise in successful operations targeting Russian drone operator positions compared to February. Syrskyi attributed these results to a combination of factors, including increased production by domestic drone manufacturers, improved operator training, and organizational adjustments within Ukraine’s armed forces. He also highlighted that Ukrainian ground-based robotic systems expanded their operational output by more than 50% over the same period. At the same time, Russia has been expanding its own unmanned warfare capabilities. Intelligence assessments indicate that by early April, Russian forces had increased their dedicated drone troops to approximately 101,000 personnel, with plans to expand this number to around 165,500 by the end of 2026. Ukrainian military development of unmanned systems continues across multiple branches, with leadership stressing their growing importance in reducing casualties while maintaining offensive pressure. Following recent assessments, Syrskyi stated that further expansion and improvement of drone and robotic systems remains a priority as Ukraine seeks to continue degrading Russian forces while limiting losses among its own personnel. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has also stated that Russia is attempting to intensify its offensive operations along the front line but is suffering increasing losses in the process, with some advances reportedly delayed or failing to meet planned timelines in several regions. In March alone, Ukrainian estimates put Russian military losses at more than 35,000 personnel, a significant portion of which were attributed to drone strikes and unmanned systems operations. Ukraine also claims that its strike drone usage advantage currently stands at approximately 1.3 to 1 compared to Russian forces, reflecting its growing reliance on unmanned warfare capabilities.
