Ukrainian drone operators have a new powerful adversary: the elite Russian unit "Rubicon". It specializes in identifying and eliminating drone operators, reports the Financial Times.
After two years of Ukrainian drones striking Russian positions with virtual impunity, the situation has changed: Russian "drone hunters" are now tracking down and killing the pilots themselves.
"It’s easy to replace a drone, but hard to replace a pilot," says Ukrainian operator Dmitry, who was a rapper before the war.
According to experts, Rubicon has approximately 5,000 fighters and significant financial resources. Its mission is to disrupt Ukrainian logistics, destroy drone teams, and train other Russian units.
Philadelphia Institute analyst Rob Lee notes that Rubicon has become the Russian military’s innovation hub, developing new tactics and technologies:
"This is not just a division, but a laboratory for all unmanned systems in Russia."
Ukrainian military officials admit that Rubicon’s new methods are making pilots’ jobs increasingly dangerous.
"If the Russians didn’t have such operators, their infantry wouldn’t have been able to break through," says fighter Artem Karyakin from the Pokrovsk region.
Rubicon’s vast resources and manpower allow it to maintain a steady advance, says a Ukrainian soldier with the call sign "Zumer" from a small drone unit near Pokrovsk.
"They have a lot of people, which means they can work 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They can change teams every five hours, and they can sleep. It’s more difficult for us because we don’t have enough people to constantly rotate, and we still need sleep," the soldier shared.
He added that the defense of Pokrovsk was "like a holiday" for Ukrainian forces before the Rubicon entered this section of the front. Drones can provide a "decisive advantage" to defenders by making the battlefield transparent, said Bob Tollust, a research fellow at RUSI. Ukraine’s small, semi-autonomous units were highly effective in sowing chaos when Russia lacked its own advanced drone system.
But Moscow has made a tremendous effort to learn the lessons Ukraine has learned, Tollust said. Kyiv must now counter the highly organized Rubicon strategy by developing its own clear, centralized battle plan, he added.
In response, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are creating their own anti-drone groups, changing tactics, carefully camouflaging their positions, and restricting movement.
"The new main rule is simple: don’t stick your neck out. It’s better to sit in your trench and check Instagram," Dmitry jokes. The Russian unit "Rubicon" was created literally in August 2024 and since then has destroyed thousands of our equipment and UAVs, and also killed and maimed many Ukrainian defenders.
In September, it became known that the Russian Federation had sent this elite unit to Pokrovsk .
