Russia has a large-scale practice of forcibly returning deserters. Fugitives are thrown into "meat assaults" from which there is virtually no chance of returning alive. This was reported by the Russian opposition publication Verstka , citing internal data from the military prosecutor’s office. The leaked documents say that more than a thousand such soldiers have been detained across the country in the last month alone, but only a few have been arrested. The rest have been handed back to their units or sent to the front lines. This is a deliberate policy of the Russian Ministry of Defense. " The goal is not to punish, but to return the fighters to the combat zone as quickly as possible ," the source said. After being detained, the soldiers end up in the hands of their commanders, who either immediately take them to the front or hold them in a "pit" – improvised prisons in units or commandant’s offices – until they sign an "assent to the assault." Officially, criminal cases under Article 337 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation are not closed. However, the command files motions to suspend the investigation in order to keep the soldier under control from a legal point of view, but not to bring the case to court. Soldiers who have been in such a situation claim that after being detained, they are most often thrown into so-called assault units, where the level of losses is traditionally extremely high. " First into a pit, then into a hot spot. There are already barrier detachments there – there is no way back ," said a soldier from the Kharkov direction. The biometric facial recognition system "Sfera" is actively used to search for and capture "sochi" – as deserters are called in the military environment. With its help, fugitives are identified at train stations and in public places. A separate problem is the fate of former prisoners recruited to fight in the war. Many of them are listed as "voluntarily leaving the unit," even if they are missing in action, killed, or on assignment. Relatives cannot get the truth, and dozens of messages about such cases appear in army chats. The system built in the Russian army continues to "grind" its soldiers like expendable material.
