A group of demonstrators gathered on Friday in front of the U.S. General Consulate to protest the 50% tariffs imposed by Donald Trump on Brazilian exports. According to Associated Press organized by unions and left-wing social movements, the protest voiced strong criticism of both Trump and Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro, while expressing support for President Lula and Brazil’s sovereignty.
Some protesters wore costumes resembling Trump and Bolsonaro depicted in signs as aligned with both leaders. Banners also demanded that Bolsonaro’s trial for allegedly attempting a coup remain a priority. Trump’s tariffs, set to take effect on August 6, exclude certain products like orange juice and aircraft parts. While Lula says he remains open to negotiation with the U.S., he made it clear that Bolsonaro’s legal situation is not part of any deal.
