European leaders have reaffirmed support for Ukraine following the summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin held in Alaska without Ukraine’s participation. In a joint statement released on Saturday, European leaders pledged more to support Kyiv and called for pressure on Russia to end Moscow’s war of invasion in Ukraine. The statement from European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen was published after they were briefed by Trump on his Friday summit with Putin. The statement said talks must be held with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as a next step, adding that they were ready to organiz a three-way summit with European leaders with the involvement of Trump and Zelenskiy. “We are clear that Ukraine must have ironclad security guarantees to effectively defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. We welcome President Trump’s statement that the US is prepared to give security guarantees,” the leaders wrote in a statement. Furthermore, leaders stressed that “no limitations should be placed on Ukraine’s armed forces or on its cooperation with third countries. Russia cannot have a veto against Ukraine‘s pathway to EU and NATO.” Volodymyr Zelenskiy is expected to meet with Donald Trump in Washington on Monday. On Friday, Trump and Putin held a nearly three-hour closed-door meeting in Joint Base Elmedorf-Richardson base in Alaska. However, no agreement was reached during the much-anticipated summit.
