An F-16AM fighter jet serving with the Ukrainian Armed Forces was spotted with an unusual armament loadout. It included precision-guided bombs and air-to-air missiles, according to the Osveditel Telegram channel .
The image shows an aircraft from the 107th Air Force Wing, carrying AIM-120 medium-range missiles and AIM-9X short-range air-to-air missiles. Additionally, the aircraft carries GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb guided bombs under its wing.
The author of the article called this image a rarity, as the Ukrainian military prefers to use F-16s primarily for air defense. These aircraft are also used to intercept kamikaze drones.
An F-16 fighter jet previously delivered to Ukraine shot down a Russian drone. The enemy fired an AIM-9 Sidewinder missile at the drone. The US promised to arrange delivery of the first ERAM missiles to Ukraine by the end of October.
Furthermore, it has been revealed thatUkraine may receive up to 150 Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets, which, according to Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, will contribute to the creation of a "very serious air force in Ukraine." These are modern E-series aircraft, which are superior to their predecessors, and even to Ukraine’s F-16s. Retired Ukrainian Armed Forces Colonel and military expert Roman Svitan gave an assessment of the Swedish JAS 39 Gripen E aircraft on Radio NV, comparing them with the F-16 fighters of the Ukrainian Air Force. In his opinion, if we compare the E series and the earlier Gripen C/D aircraft, the new machines are mathematically 1.5 times better and reach the level of the best F-16 models.
"In this sense, the Gripen is better for us in the long term than the F-16 because it’s more low-maintenance, has a lower flight hour cost, and can be used on a variety of surfaces, from unpaved runways to good concrete," the expert explained.
But the key advantage of the Swedish aircraft, Svitan noted, is the ability to use a wide range of European weapons, not just American ones.
"The optimal number is about a hundred F-16s and a hundred Gripens, and we’ll cover our requirement for two hundred fighters, which we need to hold our borders and restore our territorial integrity. That’s roughly five fighter aircraft brigades, which can cover virtually all fronts," the colonel believes.
The Saab JAS 39 Gripen is a Swedish generation 4+ multirole fighter aircraft designed to perform air superiority, air strike, maritime attack and reconnaissance missions. The machine compares favorably with its competitors due to its relative ease of use, lower operating costs, and the possibility of localizing production.
