Russian dictator Vladimir Putin faces a fresh wave of questions about his apparent poor health after appearing at a parade in Moscow on May 9.
The British tabloid Daily Mail wrote about this, noting that Putin appeared on Red Square with a “swollen” and “visibly aged” face.
The publication emphasizes that the May 9 parade was unusually low-key and took place without armored vehicles or missiles. Moreover, the tabloid suggests that few listened to the Russian dictator’s remarks during his parade speech, as attention was focused on his chubby cheeks.
Journalists, in particular, drew attention to the description of a video with Putin, published on the Telegram channel of Anton Gerashchenko , a member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine of the 8th convocation and deputy head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs from 2019 to 2021 : “The face of a ‘winner’ and the head of a ‘superpower’.” The Telegram channel Crimean Wind also commented on Putin’s appearance.
They noted: "History shows that many dictators noticeably aged in appearance before the fall of their regime or death. Scientists attribute this to chronic stress, paranoid fear of losing power, and isolation, which accelerate the aging process."
Leonid Nevzlin, an opponent of the Russian dictator, described the shortened parade as a symbol of Putin’s weakening grip, noting that "the shortened parade is a visualization of the established order."
"A state in which the main ritual is concentrated around a single aging individual, shrinking along with his capabilities. The regime is structured in such a way that the question of his future has become a question of the health of one old man," he wrote.
Russian opposition leader Mikhail Khodorkovsky called Putin a "deeply frightened, aging dictator" and said he used the Nazi defeat in World War II for his own propaganda purposes.
"In an empty square, with almost no equipment, under the dome of electronic warfare, he is trying to privatize someone else’s victory in order to justify his shameful, criminal war," the Daily Mail quotes Khodorkovsky as saying.
In turn, military analyst and former advisor to the Ukrainian Minister of Defense, Oleksiy Kopytko , in particular, pointed out that "at the parade, the focus wasn’t on the leader of a superpower, but on a tired, shaky-eyed old man who’s being tolerated for now. And he senses it."
"Experience and skill still help him put on the right mask when communicating, but when he’s alone for a second, it all comes out on his face. A short, decrepit man, bending under the weight he can no longer lift," Kopytko noted.
Putin’s brief appearance during the event in Red Square sparked ripping online comments over his appearance, with one joking that Western sanctions on Russia were affecting the president’s Botox.“Putin, what’s with the face?” a pro-Ukraine account quipped on X, noting, “The parade ended at lightning speed — just 45 minutes The Kremlin boss was immediately rushed off Red Square surrounded by heavy security.” 0Another user shared a picture of the Russian tyrant with a pained expression during Saturday’s rally. “Putin’s last parade,” the person wrote. A third X user said, “Putin genuinely looks sick, this isn’t the face of a well man even for his age.”
Someone else said, “Putin must be residing in the bunker for an extended period, possibly even longer than this year. He seems to be in dire need of some Botox touch-ups.”
Others pointed to the pared-down nature of the parade, with no armored vehicles or ballistic missiles, as well as Putin’s additional security precautions. Even Putin’s supporters admitted that the event was a shadow of previous years’ parades.
“It was a modest parade,” pro-Kremlin commentator Sergei Markov wrote on Telegram, adding, “There are still enormous challenges ahead.”
The Russian president used his brief appearance at the parade to invoke the country’s sacrifices during the Second World War to muster support for the conflict in Ukraine, while not naming that war directly.
