Massive wildfires have engulfed Zabaykalsk region in Russia’s Far East, local media reported on Tuesday. The wildfires have reached residential areas, prompting evacuation of local residents as well as a military facility – the 103rd armored repair plant. According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the fire has already spread across 2,500 hectares of forest area. Earlier, Chita–Zabaikalsk highway was closed due to heavy smoke. Over 150 personnel have been deployed to fight the fires, with aircraft also being used in these efforts. However, firefighting work is hampered by extreme heat reaching up to 37°C and strong winds. A video footage circulated in social media captures the intensity of the wildfires in the region. The video shot by a local train operator shows burning summer homes as the train passed through the flames. Some 350 hectares of forest are burning in the region, with children’s camps being evacuated. Due to the spreading wildfire, children’s camp "Zhemchuzhina" was evacuated. Nearly 160 children were also evacuated from the "Parus" camp. Initially, one hectare of forest caught fire, but on June 22, the area of the fire grew to 100 hectares, reaching 350 hectares on June 23. The scope of the fire has reached 10 kilometers, the Ministry of Natural Resources reported in its latest update. The fire has three main directions: one towards the village of Novokruchininsky, the second towards the railway, and the third heading towards Atamanovka locality in the region. Residents of Atamanovka are being evacuated. The village lost electricity, with local residents reporting a "terrible and unforgettable night," according to social media reports.
