France signals openness to direct Macron–Putin talks | Morning Report

Our main stories today:
– France has welcomed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s willingness to speak with President Emmanuel Macron over the war in Ukraine. This follows Macron’s statement on Friday in which he said Europe needs to re-engage in direct talks with Putin if the latest U.S.-led efforts to broker a Ukraine peace deal flounder.

– Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he is waiting for a report on crucial negotiations held in Miami. Sunday’s talks in Florida marked the latest round of U.S., Russian, and Ukrainian negotiations on a 20-point peace plan proposed by President Donald Trump to end the nearly four-year war.

– Thousands of protestors have again taken to the streets in Serbia, this time over what they’re calling government pressure on state universities. The country’s student-led demonstrations first picked up headlines after the collapse of a railway station roof killed 16 people last year in the city of Novi Sad.
