Ukraine’s military intelligence says it carried out a successful behind-the-lines raid in the Kharkiv region, destroying a Russian ammunition depot.
A special unit of Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence, the Freedom of Russia Legion, blew up a Russian occupiers’ ammunition depot in the Kharkiv region. The operation took place in December 2025 but has only now been disclosed. According to GUR, the unit infiltrated a Russian Armed Forces position known as “Izba” in the Kupyansk district, pushing roughly 7 kilometers into occupied territory. They located a field ammunition depot and destroyed it along with its security personnel, GUR said.
GUR said the destroyed site was “key” to supplying and rotating Russian units around Kupyansk and directly supported their tactical resilience. The strike dealt a significant blow to the enemy and complicated the maintenance of its combat capability on that sector of the front, the agency added. “Freedom of Russia Legion sabotage-reconnaissance groups are steadily ramping up operations deep in the enemy’s rear – from pinpoint strikes to systemic pressure on logistics, command, and sustainment elements,” GUR said. Intelligence officials also noted that earlier the legion disabled a logistics route in the Zaporizhzhia sector used to deliver metal to occupied Crimea. Special forces also eliminated personnel at a drone control point in the Pokrovsk sector, eliminating operators and control elements used for reconnaissance and fire coordination.
“Our priority is to disorganize the enemy’s command and logistics even before the front line,” the legion added. The LSR has been operating behind Russian lines since late 2022, carrying out targeted sabotage and strikes on logistics, transport routes, and command facilities. The unit, largely made up of Chechen security forces, is part of Russia’s National Guard but is directly subordinate to Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov. GUR said the operation involved the detonation of a vehicle, which resulted in the deaths of the three Akhmat fighters. During the raid, Ukrainian intelligence also collected information on Russian logistics, military equipment, and command posts.
