During a closed-door meeting with US President Donald Trump at the UN General Assembly in New York, Volodymyr Zelenskyy requested Tomahawk missiles, according to the British newspaper The Telegraph.
Citing sources, the newspaper writes that the meeting was perceived as extremely positive.
The Ukrainian president argued that high-tech weapons systems like the Tomahawk would help Vladimir Putin negotiate a peace agreement. After the meeting, during a conversation with reporters, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Trump agreed to his request for a long-range cruise missile that would put Moscow within striking distance of Kyiv.
However, there is no confirmation yet that the US will agree to transfer Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine.
The newspaper notes that with a range of over 2,400 km and a warhead weighing 450 kg, these cruise missiles are far more effective than any similar long-range weapons provided to Ukraine by Western allies.
As reported, during US President Donald Trump’s second term, the terms of American arms supplies to Ukraine, initiated by his predecessor, Joe Biden, were changed. NATO must now purchase weapons from the US for distribution to Ukraine. The first two packages, worth $500 million, have already been delivered.
Experts are assessing the possibility of expanding the list of weapons that could be transferred to Ukraine under this mechanism, specifically including Tomahawk missiles. Aviation expert Valeriy Romanenko says this is a distant prospect. At the same time, retired US Army Colonel Frank Sobchak says there is no single weapon that could change the course of a war.
The transfer of American Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine could radically alter the balance of power on the front. According to experts, their range will be sufficient to strike targets not only in the European part of Russia but also deep into the country—as far as the Urals and Siberia
These missiles could reach Tyumen in the east, as well as Murmansk and Arkhangelsk in the north. In total, approximately sixty regions of the aggressor country would be within their range. Among the most significant targets are Moscow and the Moscow region, as well as St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region.
The Tomahawk is an American cruise missile manufactured by Raytheon. It is a long-range strategic and tactical missile. It is capable of terrain-following and evading air defense systems. The missile carries a warhead weighing up to 450 kilograms and is highly accurate. It can be launched from ships and land-based launchers.
