Iran has built up such a powerful missile capability that, theoretically, it extends beyond the Middle East and directly threatens Europe and Ukraine. According to Defense Express , the key threat comes from medium-range ballistic missiles, including the Khorramshahr .
According to available data, the Khorramshahr missile is capable of carrying a warhead weighing up to 1,800 kg and hitting targets at a range of approximately 2,000 km. By reducing the warhead’s weight, the range can be increased to 3,000 km, making it one of the most powerful missiles in Tehran’s arsenal. In addition, Iran possesses the Sejjil, Ghadr , and Emad missiles , with a range of up to 2,000 km and a warhead of up to 850 kg. These systems theoretically allow strikes not only against Israel or the Persian Gulf states, but also against southeastern Europe. From northwest Iran, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, and Moldova are potentially within striking distance. At Khorramshahr’s maximum range, the risk zone extends to Central Europe, including Germany and Italy.
Iran has recently launched hundreds of weapons—more than 700 ballistic missiles and over 900 drones. These strikes have targeted targets in the region, including US military bases. Drone attacks have also been recorded against a British base in Cyprus. Drones pose a separate threat, particularly the Shahed-136 UAV, well-known to Ukrainians, with a range of up to 2,500 km. Theoretically, they could reach Europe, although their route passes through active air defense zones, making the likelihood of reaching their targets low. Despite its stated capabilities, Iran’s long-range missiles are limited. Furthermore, Europe is already strengthening its missile defenses. Specifically, Romania operates the Aegis Ashore system with SM-3 missiles, while Germany is deploying the Arrow 3 system.
As a reminder, Tehran threatened the United States and the Persian Gulf states with weapons "the likes of which the world has never seen."
İn this case Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made a surprising initiative amid the escalating situation in the Middle East. According to Bloomberg , he proposed sending Ukrainian air defense specialists to the region. However, this is only possible under one condition: if local leaders can convince Vladimir Putin to agree to a temporary ceasefire in the war against Ukraine. According to Zelenskyy, during the years of full-scale war with Russia, Ukraine has accumulated unique experience in countering drones, including the Iranian-Russian Shahed. These drones are now actively used not only against Ukraine but also in attacks on countries in the Middle East. Kyiv is ready to send trained, experienced operators to Middle Eastern countries who can identify and destroy targets under constant attack. Ukraine proposes sending air defense specialists to the region immediately after a ceasefire is established, even if it is short-lived. Zelenskyy has suggested a timeframe ranging from several weeks to two months, but emphasizes that a guarantee of a pause in shelling is a key condition. The initiative comes amid increasing Iranian attacks on Gulf countries. In recent days, drone and missile strikes have hit various cities, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi, causing irreparable economic damage.
