In Moscow and other large cities of the Russian Federation, large-scale shutdowns of the mobile Internet began. Local authorities explain to the population that this is being done "for security purposes" during the "Victory Day" celebration. Earlier, Russian media reported that the operators are sending messages to the residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg about time limits in the work of the mobile Internet and mass media. It is expected that such a situation will persist from May 5 to May 9. According to the Downdetector and "Сбой.рф" services, the outburst of mourning began around 08:00 on May 5. Interruptions have been recorded by users of operators MTS, T2, Megafon, Beeline and Yota, and T2 residents also report problems.
Mobile operators have already started sending relevant messages to subscribers. In them, subscribers are recommended to use Wi-Fi and turn on VoLTE. According to disgruntled Russians, even the sites from the so-called "white lists" do not work, access to which they promised to preserve during shutdowns. These include public services, search engine Yandex and Russian social networks. In Moscow and St. Petersburg, it is not the first time that mobile Internet is turned off before May 9, the connection was lost last year as well. The Russian authorities then declared that "it is necessary" and the problems are related to the preparation and holding of the Victory Parade. We remind you that after the invasion of Ukraine, the Russian authorities strengthened their control over the Internet. In particular, Facebook, Instagram, Discord and a number of other popular resources were blocked. Also, the authorities massively remove VPN-services and fine them for their use. In July 2025, Russia launched a new platform – the Max messenger from the VK company, which resembles the Chinese WeChat. The application has access to the microphone, camera, geolocation, contacts and files of the user, moreover, it is controlled by special services. Later, the authorities obliged to pre-install Max on all new devices sold in Russia. Government employees, teachers and students must use this platform. Russia shut down airports and temporarily cut mobile internet access for many users in Moscow on Tuesday, as it tightened security ahead of the 9 May Victory Day Parade. The parade – Russia’s foremost national celebration – has already been scaled back and will proceed without heavy military hardware for the first time in nearly two decades, amid fears of long-range Ukrainian drone strikes.
