Russia is increasingly using international migration channels to replenish its occupation army fighting against Ukraine. It is attempting to compensate for the enormous losses it is suffering on the front lines by recruiting foreigners from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The Telegraph writes about this .
People are lured with promises of legal work, high salaries, and social benefits, but upon arrival in Russia, they often find themselves on the front lines without any serious training and no choice. The publication told the story of a Cameroonian named Emmanuel, who fell into Russia’s trap. After an unsuccessful attempt to emigrate to Europe and returning home with debts, he saw a job posting in Russia. The vacancy offered work as a security guard and cook for the army, far from the fighting. " I didn’t hesitate, because with such a salary and benefits I could finally help my family escape poverty ," he told researchers at the French Institute of International Relations. On the spot, it turned out that the promises were a lie: he was sent to the front, where the average life expectancy of a recruit can be about 72 hours. Analysts estimate that Russians have recruited thousands of foreigners in a similar manner. The Russian army is constantly in need of a new stream of "cannon fodder," as it suffers severe losses at the front. Although the bulk of those mobilized remain Russian citizens, the proportion of foreigners on the battlefield is noticeably increasing. According to Ukrainian data, of the more than 10,000 Russian soldiers captured, approximately 7% were foreign mercenaries from 40 countries. In total, according to Kyiv’s estimates, Russia has recruited approximately 18,000 foreigners from 128 countries, of which at least 3,300 have already become "cargo 200." The presence of people of African descent is increasingly being recorded on the front lines, including in drone footage. In one such video, a black mercenary is led through a trench with a gun to his head and a mine strapped to his chest, then ordered to run toward Ukrainian positions. In another video, a group of recently arrived Africans in a snowy forest are mocked as expendable. Researchers note that recruitment methods largely mirror those of human trafficking. In Africa, Russia often uses intermediaries previously involved in illegal migration and labor trafficking. " This is exploitation of migrant labor, and Russia knows very well which countries have large numbers of migrants, so it uses these networks to attract labor ," said Thierry Vircoulon, an expert at the French Institute of International Relations. In countries where Russian mercenaries, including the Wagner PMC, had previously operated, they served as recruitment channels. In other regions, the process took place through regular travel agencies, which provided visas, tickets, and accommodations. Promised salaries of over $2,000 per month, as well as the prospect of obtaining a Russian passport, served as additional incentives. Russia’s appeal to some African populations is fueled by the long-standing myth of Russia as an anti-colonialist partner, which is now actively promoted through social media. Russian authorities invite African bloggers with thousands of followers to Russia, where they showcase their luxurious lifestyles and talk about supposed opportunities for their compatriots. Men aren’t the only victims of deception. Russia is also accused of recruiting African women under false pretenses to work at a drone factory in the Alabuga special economic zone in Tatarstan. Many of the captured foreign recruits report being forced to sign documents in Russian and having their passports confiscated. One of these captives, 43-year-old Ugandan citizen Richard Akantoran, said he borrowed money for his flight to Russia, hoping to find work as a cleaner or security guard. Previously, he was earning about $50 a month at a supermarket in Kampala. He said he was ordered at gunpoint to " sign these papers ." He later managed to escape from his position and was detained by Ukrainian troops. " If you’re promised a well-paid job in Russia, you’ll end up in the army. It’s better to stay in Africa with your people and your children. Don’t come and don’t be fooled! " he said.
