Another video has emerged in social media, illustrating the dire conditions in the Russian army. The video features a Russian soldier making a video address to his spouse, asking her to send 300,000 Rubles or over 3,200 euros, as a payment to his commander in exchange of a good treatment in the unit. The soldier has bruised eyes and signs of torture on his face. Mobilized soldier Ivan Kuznetsov, with a call sign “Artist,” asked his spouse Ekaterina to transfer money to the commander of the 82nd Motor Rifle Regiment of the 69th Division, call sign “Argon,” so that he would stop beating him and throwing him into a pit. “They set me free from the pit. As you can see, they have been beating me the whole night. Argon is not happy that you have not sent him the money. Send him 300,000. Otherwise, he will throw me into the pit again. I don’t know what will happen then. Do not worry. I will get in contact after I get out of the pit and we will resolve the money issues,” the soldiers said in his video address. Meanwhile, former fellow servicemen of “Artist” said that he was transferred to this unit after refusing to sign a contract. At present, Kuznetsov has gone missing and is no longer in contact. The video highlights corruption in the Russian army that have worsened since the start of full-fledged invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. There have been numerous reports about torture, mistreatment, and corruption within the Russian military, involving severe beatings, psychological humiliation, forced labor. Some testimonies describe the use of violence to enforce discipline or extract confessions, while others point to a lack of accountability for officers who permit or participate in such action. Soldiers and mobilized personnel have complained about poor training, inadequate equipment, and coercive disciplinary practices. Some accounts describe troops being threatened, beaten, or detained by their own commanders for refusing orders or attempting to retreat. There have been repeated reports of so-called “barrier troops” or blocking detachments used to prevent withdrawal, contributing to a climate of fear. Families of soldiers have spoken publicly about neglect, lack of communication, and the abandonment of wounded personnel, suggesting systemic problems in command and logistics.
