A behind-the-scenes conversation about one of Poland’s most moving screen reconstructions of a real maritime tragedy.
Pulse of Culture invites audiences on a cinematic deep-dive into Heweliusz — a Polish miniseries directed by Jan Holoubek, retelling the tragic events surrounding the sinking of the ferry Jan Heweliusz in January 1993 on the Baltic Sea.
The catastrophe, which claimed 56 lives, remains the deadliest peacetime maritime disaster in Polish history. The series reconstructs not only the violent storm and the chaos of the ship’s final hours, but also the aftermath on land — a turbulent public reckoning with accountability, state institutions, and the unanswered questions that shaped Poland’s collective memory in the post-1989 transitionary period. We will also discuss Holoubek’s broader storytelling approach to his work, 25 Years of Innocence and Rojst, where drama serves truth, not spectacle.
This is a talk about the craft of film— but also, a filmmaker’s responsibility. Guest: Jan Holoubek Host: Sally Jastrzebska
