Iran on Friday announced that commercial shipping would be allowed to resume through the Strait of Hormuz for the duration of the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. In a message shared on social media, Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi stated that all commercial vessels are permitted to pass through the key maritime corridor while the truce remains in effect. At the same time, he noted that ships must adhere to designated transit paths set by Iran’s maritime authorities, underscoring that movement through the strait will continue to be regulated. The Strait of Hormuz is among the most strategically important maritime chokepoints in the world, handling a large portion of global oil and gas flows, which makes any statements about its status highly consequential for international markets. The closure of the strait was in response to coordinated US and Israeli attacks on Iran, which killed 87-year-old Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28. Although Tehran describes the route as “fully open,” many analysts and international observers argue that measures such as designated transit corridors, combined with the ongoing military presence in the area, suggest that access is still regulated rather than genuinely unrestricted. Several governments and shipping firms are also taking a cautious approach, pointing to recent threats, vessel checks, and disruptions that have made passage through the strait uncertain.
