Iran’s newly-appointed Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has been wounded and is unresponsive to communications, Washington Post reported, citing the US and Israeli intelligence sources. According to the report, Mojtaba Khamenei’s apparent silence and absence have created a power vacuum, allowing Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, known as IRGC, to take the lead in managing state affairs. Security sources from both countries described the new supreme leader as injured, isolated, and effectively unreachable. Despite the uncertainty surrounding 56-year-old Khamenei’s condition, Israeli officials believe that senior clerics, together with IRGC leadership, have tightened their control over the country’s political and security structures. Earlier, the New York Post reported that Western intelligence agencies still consider Mojtaba Khamenei to be alive. This assessment is reportedly based on ongoing efforts by high-ranking Iranian figures to arrange meetings with him, implying that he remains a figure of authority, even if out of public view. Doubts about his status intensified after he failed to make a public appearance during Nowruz celebrations when the country’s Supreme Leader traditionally makes a televised address. Instead of appearing, Mojtaba Khamenei released only a written message via Telegram app. One US official noted that his absence from such a symbolic occasion raised serious concerns, calling it a “major warning sign.” “This situation goes beyond unusual,” the official reportedly said, adding that while it seems unlikely Iran would elevate a deceased individual to such a position, there is still no clear evidence confirming that Mojtaba is actively governing. Intelligence agencies, including the Central Intelligence Agency, are said to be examining whether images shared on his Telegram account during the holiday are recent or recycled. Mojtaba’s absence has also drawn attention because it contrasts sharply with the actions of Iran’s president, Masoud Pezeshkian, who released a public video message for the holiday. Speculation about Mojtaba’s condition has reached political circles in Washington as well. During a congressional hearing, US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard stated that he had been “severely injured” in the Israeli strike, adding that the internal decision-making structure in Iran remains opaque. Reports indicate that several of his close family members, including his wife and other relatives, were killed in the same attack.
