The Israel Defense Forces, IDF, announced on Monday that the Israel Air Force had carried out a precision strike at Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport, successfully destroying an aircraft used by Iran’s top leadership. According to the IDF, the operation took place overnight and specifically targeted a plane that had been used by Ali Khamenei, as well as other high-ranking Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian and members of the country’s military establishment. In its official statement, the IDF emphasized that the aircraft played a central role in Iran’s strategic operations. It was reportedly employed by Khamenei and senior figures in the Iranian regime to facilitate military procurement activities and coordinate operations with allied nations, both within the region and internationally. The announcement described the plane as a key instrument for transporting personnel and conducting flights that supported the leadership’s efforts to manage military and strategic initiatives. The IDF framed the strike as part of its ongoing efforts to disrupt Iran’s ability to conduct military planning and logistical operations through the use of aviation assets. By targeting this particular aircraft, the Israeli military stated that it aimed to degrade the capacity of Iran’s senior leadership to oversee military programs and maintain coordination with partner states across the Middle East and beyond. “As a result, another strategic asset of the regime has been degraded,” the IDF said in the statement, stressing that it would continue operations aimed at Iran’s military forces. Located in Western Tehran, Mehrabad Airport is one of the city’s oldest aviation hubs. Israel and the US launched joint operation titled Epic Fury against Iran on February 28, targeting the country’ military, senior officials and nuclear facilities, ballistic missile infrastructure, command posts and security site. Tehran has carried out multiple missile and drone attacks aimed at Israel, U.S. military bases, and allied countries in the Gulf, causing both civilian deaths and significant damage to infrastructure in cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi. These assaults have also temporarily interrupted commercial air travel. In addition, Iranian strikes have forced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital channel for global oil shipments, which has driven up energy prices and created wider economic consequences worldwide.
