Russia on Wednesday said President Vladimir Putin had been calling on Ukraine to hold elections for "a long time" as Moscow reacted to a statement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on holding a possible ballot.

According to Associated Press U.S. President Donald Trump repeated his call this week for Ukraine to hold a presidential election even though martial law doesn’t allow it and Zelenskyy, elected in 2019, had his five-year term extended because of the conflict.

Trump’s position on Ukraine’s failure to hold an election mirrors frequent statements on the subject by Putin.

Responding to Trump’s remarks, Zelenskyy asked for help from the U.S. and possibly Europe “to ensure security for the elections" and suggested that Ukraine could be ready to hold balloting in 60 to 90 days.

In past comments, Zelenskyy has declined to hold elections until a ceasefire is declared and martial law lifted, and Ukrainians have largely supported that decision.

"This is what president Putin has talked about for a long time," Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said in response to Zelenskyy’s statement.

"This is what president Trump has talked about recently. Therefore, we’ll see how things develop in this direction."

Peskov also stated Russia had "carefully read" part of Trump’s interview with Politico where he commented on peace talks to end the conflict in Ukraine.

In the interview released Tuesday, Trump pressed Zelenskyy to accept the U.S. proposal that Ukraine cede territory to Russia, arguing Moscow has the “upper hand” in the fighting and that Zelenskyy’s government must “play ball.”

"This is a very important interview, very important statement," Peskov said.

"It is mostly consonant to our understanding in terms of (Ukraine’s) membership in NATO, in terms of territories, in terms of how Ukraine loses its lands… It is very important in terms of the prospects of a peaceful settlement."

On Tuesday Zelenskyy reaffirmed his strong refusal to cede any territory.
