Lithuania Receives First HIMARS Missile Systems

Lithuania has unveiled the first M142 HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems purchased from the United States.

This was reported on the official website of the Lithuanian Defense Ministry.

The Ministry of National Defense of Lithuania stated that the new systems will significantly enhance the country’s defense capabilities and strengthen NATO’s eastern flank. Particular emphasis is placed on deterring potential threats to the region.

Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas noted that HIMARS has already proven its effectiveness during the war in Ukraine. According to him, mobility and high precision of these systems significantly enhance the combat capability of the Lithuanian army.

“Today, more than ever, it is crucial that the United States and its allies be able to work together seamlessly, deterring and overcoming threats together. HIMARS’ ability to integrate with systems and platforms used by NATO and allied forces makes it an extremely valuable asset for joint operations. We are committed to providing the Ministry of National Defense of the Republic of Lithuania with the capabilities necessary to defend the country and promote regional security,” said Gaylia Campbell, Vice President and General Manager at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control.

Lithuania signed a contract to purchase eight HIMARS in 2022. In addition to the launchers themselves, the agreement includes the supply of combat and training ammunition.

The package includes various types of guided missiles, including ATACMS tactical missiles. The contract is valued at approximately $495 million. It will be carried out by the American company Lockheed Martin.

It is worth noting that in January 2024, the defense ministers of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania agreed on the future joint use of HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems.

The purpose of the memorandum of understanding is to lay the groundwork for the joint use of these weapons systems in both peacetime and wartime.

Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have ordered a total of 20 launchers for the highly mobile M142 HIMARS light multiple rocket launchers from the U.S., which will be armed with GMLRS rockets with a range of up to 84 km, as well as M57 ATACMS short-range supersonic tactical ballistic missiles.

Additionally, in April 2026, it was reported that Estonia signed a contract to purchase additional HIMARS multiple rocket launchers, which are scheduled for delivery as early as next year.

The agreement calls for the purchase of three systems and ammunition, as well as an investment of approximately $11 million in the Estonian defense industry.

The new contract also provides for maintenance capabilities for these systems’ components in Estonia. This will allow local companies to independently provide technical support services.
