As the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine approaches, it’s a particularly painful time for Oksana, who lost her husband shortly after the start of the war.
According to Associated Press Oksana and Oleksandr had settled in the northern Ukrainian city of Chernihiv in 2011.
She was a Ukrainian language and literature teacher, and he was a builder, carpenter, and welder.
At the time, they were a young family with their six-year-old son, Davyd.
In 2020, their second and long-awaited son, Hlib, was born.
It had felt like a fresh start and they’d planned to move to a new apartment.
What they hadn’t anticipated was war.
Chernihiv was among the first areas to come under Russian attack in 2022.
That same day, 46-year-old Oleksandr joined the territorial defense — a volunteer force rapidly formed in response to the invasion and composed mostly of civilian men.
Meanwhile, Oksana and her sons took shelter in the basement of a local church.
Shortly afterwards came the devastating news that Oleksandr had been killed.
With heavy fighting surrounding them, Oksana and her sons evacuated to the Kyiv region, and due to the ongoing danger, they were unable to attend Oleksandr’s funeral.
The hope of seeing her husband alive stayed with her and Hlib for a long time.
