In Russia, a preliminary purge is underway of high-ranking intelligence officials who were preparing an invasion of Ukraine. The mysterious explosion in a Moscow shopping mall in the summer of 2025 is just one episode in this process. This information was published by the influential Russian resource VChK-OGPU, which is associated with the Russian special services. The incident that occurred on August 24, 2025, raised many questions from the very beginning. An explosion rocked a children’s store, injuring Lieutenant General Alexei Titov, deputy head of the FSB’s 5th Service and head of the agency’s analytical department. The official story that a helium cylinder had detonated was so unconvincing that it only heightened suspicions.
The Cheka-OGPU claims that this was a terrorist attack directed against Titov. "The bomb was given to him as a gift by the widow of an FSB officer, Elena Barysheva. The woman died instantly, and the general, whose legs had been amputated, was put into a coma. The circumstances… point to a showdown within the Russian intelligence services. A purge of the generals responsible for launching the SVO is underway," the Russian outlet wrote. According to him, the explosion was so powerful that “the walls of the building shook”, people fled from there in panic, and some were injured. The Cheka-OGPU claims that the woman who brought the bomb was a widow. Several years ago, her husband, an FSB colonel who was friends with Titov, died under mysterious circumstances. She called the general and asked for a meeting. "Titov decided not to refuse his friend’s widow and arranged to meet her during lunch break at the Detsky Mir building. As Titov approached Elena, an explosion occurred," the Russian outlet reported. He doesn’t rule out the possibility that the woman was taking revenge for her "inappropriate treatment" of her late husband and their family. However, it’s also possible that she was persuaded to carry out the explosion. The victim, Titov, is a remarkable figure. He played a key role in preparing the aggression against Ukraine, which failed. "It was precisely the information from Titov’s analytical department (the Fifth Service specializes in collecting intelligence in the former Soviet Union) that became one of the catalysts for Putin’s decision to launch an invasion of Ukrainian territory," the Cheka-OGPU reported. According to the resource, Titov was not the only high-ranking intelligence officer involved in preparing the war and ultimately falling victim to an assassination attempt. On February 6, 2026, shots were opened against Vladimir Alekseyev, the first deputy head of the Russian GRU. He was seriously wounded. "According to the source, in both the Titov and Alekseev cases, the FSB’s Far East and North Caucasus units had preliminary information about possible assassination attempts. Specifically, regarding Alekseev’s situation, a corresponding report was submitted a month before the assassination attempt. However, the FSB leadership decided not to respond to these ‘signals.’ Moreover, internal investigations into both assassination attempts were terminated by decision of the FSB leadership," the outlet wrote. He believes that a program has been launched to “cleanse” high-ranking officials involved in the failure of the war.
