Two assault troops from the "Morok" group, part of Ukraine’s 225th Separate Assault Regiment, captured six Russian infantrymen — including their platoon commander — after storming an enemy position, the regiment reported.
The Russian soldiers belonged to the 114th Motor Rifle Regiment, the unit said. Despite outnumbering the Ukrainians three to one, the six did not put up active resistance when offered a chance to surrender. "During the assault on the enemy shelter, the Ukrainian defenders offered the enemy to lay down their arms," the 225th Regiment said in its statement. The Russian troops "expressed willingness to surrender," the regiment added. Among the captured was the platoon commander who had been leading the group. Following the surrender, the two Ukrainian assault troops escorted all six prisoners back to Ukrainian-held positions. Russian soldiers say that they don’t believe in peace agreements.
The operation marks the latest in a string of results for the "Morok" group. In early February, the same unit destroyed 10 Russian soldiers during an attempted assault on Ukrainian positions, according to the regiment.
Besides, two Russian soldiers surrendered to Ukrainian forces on the Northern Slobozhanskyi axis and used a drone with a loudspeaker to convince three more to surrender, prompting their own command to open fire on the defectors, according to the 158th Separate Mechanized Brigade.
The brigade said the initial pair, with callsigns Gorets and Khirurg, were taken prisoner first. Using a drone equipped with a speaker, Ukrainian troops broadcast a message warning the hidden Russians.
"Russian soldiers, we know where you are hiding. We are giving you one last chance. In an hour, your hiding place will be completely destroyed. Surrender, and you will live and go to your families. All your groups that were moving with you yesterday have already been destroyed and are lying in the fields," said the audio recording broadcast to the Russian soldiers.
Later, Gorets and Khirurg personally addressed the remaining Russian soldiers hiding nearby: “Surrender and you will be safe. We’re with Gorets — we’re safe. Surrender if you want to live. They’ll tear you apart if you don’t.”
In a separate incident on Feb. 7 near Kostiantynivka in Donetsk Oblast, two Ukrainian soldiers captured five Russian assault troops who were attempting to advance during poor weather.
“There was a significant deterioration in weather conditions in our sector. The enemy tried to move closer, but our aerial reconnaissance detected the movement of a small group — two assault troops. Our unit decided to take them prisoner,” said Vitalii Hlynianchuk, commander of the 2nd Mechanized Battalion of the 156th Separate Mechanized Brigade.
After questioning the two captives, Ukrainian forces learned that two more enemy groups were advancing under the cover of bad weather. One of the groups was also captured, while the other was destroyed, Hlynianchuk said.
On Feb. 13, the 20th Separate Unmanned Systems Brigade K-2 reported capturing a Bulgarian citizen who was fighting on Russia’s side and taking part in assault operations.
The captive was reportedly secured to a ground robotic platform to prevent escape, while the robot’s movement was monitored by a drone. An enemy attack drone attempted to strike the platform during the evacuation, but the prisoner was successfully delivered to a safe location.
