Mazurek, pisanki and Easter palms – the soul of Polish Easter | Pulse of Culture

This week on Pulse of Culture, we celebrate Easter in Poland, where ancient customs are very much alive.

The Mazurek cake has a surprisingly international story. Pisanki — decorated Easter eggs — are one of Poland’s most cherished traditions, with roots going back centuries. Easter palms, some reaching extraordinary heights, are a distinctive symbol of the season. We visit the National Ethnographic Museum in Warsaw, where artisans and folk creators are keeping these customs alive.

And we close with the Tallis Scholars performing Renaissance vocal polyphony at Gdansk’s Actus Humanus Resurrectio festival — one of Europe’s finest celebrations of early music.

Pulse of Culture is a weekly English-language magazine for anyone with a connection to Poland, including tourists, the diaspora, and the simply curious. New episodes are released every Sunday.
