Military Attaché Assistant of Kazakhstan Detained in Poland on Suspicion of Espionage

On August 1, the Internal Security Agency (ABW) of Poland reported the detention of a citizen of “one of the Asian countries”.

The man was detained on July 30 in the Polish city of Bydgoszcz, ABW reports.

He was identified as a career military intelligence officer who was operating under diplomatic cover in a European country.

“He conducted intelligence activities that harmed the security of Poland and the military structures of the allies,” ABW said in a statement.

Polskie Radio clarified that the suspect had been spying in Bydgoszcz and Warsaw since March 15. He is charged with espionage, and the court sent him to custody for three months.

Kazakhstan confirmed that the detainee is an assistant to the Kazakhstan military attaché.

The Elmedia project, citing sources, reports that the detainee’s name is Anuar B. He had been working at the Kazakh embassy in Ukraine for a year and a half. His diplomatic immunity was valid only on the territory of Ukraine, so there were no obstacles to his detention in Poland.
