Ukraine’s most famous missile maker start-up is trialing a new ballistic weapon that the firm claims will reach Moscow. Thanks to the FP-9 mock-up being displayed next to the FP-7 mock-up, it is now possible to estimate the dimensions of Fire Point’s long-range ballistic missile. It appears significantly larger not only than ATACMS, but also than russia’s Iskander and even Ukraine’s Hrim-2, according to Defence Express. During the exhibition Road to URC or Ukraine Recovery Conference – Security and Defense Dimension, currently taking place in Rzeszów, Poland, the first mock-up of the FP-9 ballistic missile developed by the Ukrainian company Fire Point was publicly demonstrated. The previously announced specifications of the missile include a range of 855 km and an 800 kg warhead. The company had also stated earlier that FP-9 is expected to complete codification by Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense in the summer of 2026, which would open the way for deliveries to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Since its range is sufficient to strike targets in the Moscow area, the public appearance of the missile mock-up naturally attracted considerable attention. Although only photos are currently available, even these allow for a much more detailed assessment of the project, Defence Express says. Previously, the same illustration had been used for both FP-7 and FP-9, creating the impression that the more powerful missile would simply be a scaled-up version of the smaller one. More importantly, the FP-9 mock-up was placed next to the FP-7 mock-up, which is already undergoing live-fire testing. If both models were built to the same scale, this side-by-side display makes it possible to estimate the dimensions of the larger ballistic missile. The reason this comparison matters is that FP-7 uses the body of the 48N6 surface-to-air missile for the S-400, which means its length is 7.5 meters and its diameter is 0.52 meters. Based on this reference, FP-9 appears to be approximately 12.5 meters long, while its maximum diameter could reach around 1.1 meters. This would make it larger than russia’s 9M723 ballistic missile used in the Iskander operational-tactical missile system, which measures 7.2 meters in length and 0.95 meters in diameter. Interestingly, similar dimensions were also declared for another Ukrainian missile project, Hrim-2, also known as Sapsan, which was announced with a length of 7.2 meters. FP-9 would also exceed the size of another well-known ballistic missile: the liquid-fueled R-17 of the Elbrus missile system, better known by its NATO designation, Scud, Defence Express says. That missile had a length of 11.1 meters and a diameter of 0.88 meters. After such comparisons, mentioning ATACMS may almost be unnecessary, because the American ballistic missile is actually rather compact, measuring just 4 meters in length with a diameter of 0.61 meters. At the same time, missile size is directly tied to its required performance. If the goal is to deliver an 800 kg warhead to a range of 850 km, a ballistic missile simply cannot be small.
