Russia has few air defense systems capable of shooting down ballistic missiles, and to cover its entire territory it would need over 150-200 S-400 systems. Military analyst Pavlo Narozhnyi stated this.
"The Russians have several air defense systems capable of shooting down ballistic missiles. Specifically, the S-300, S-350, S-400, and S-500. Of all these systems, only the S-400 and S-500 are currently capable of countering ballistic missiles, since the S-300 was developed quite a long time ago. Before the war, Russia had over 50 S-400 air defense complexes, but as of today, Ukraine’s Defense Forces have destroyed at least 25 of them. Moreover, most of these complexes are located in temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. However, our primary targets are located on Russian territory itself, and the Russians are unlikely to relocate such complexes from the temporarily occupied territories to the Russian Federation territory. Therefore, they truly lack effective countermeasures against ballistic missiles," Narozhnyi explained on Espreso TV.
The analyst emphasized that with the increase in ballistic missile attacks, Russians will have to urgently seek systems to protect their own facilities. "Ukraine is searching worldwide to obtain at least a few Patriot systems. We’re standing in line and waiting for additional Patriot systems. The Russians will face an absolutely identical situation. They have over 25 complexes capable of shooting down ballistic missiles, but they would need at least 150-200 units to cover their entire territory," he concluded. All this shows that Moscow, where decisions are made, is also under serious threat. The Russian capital has become more vulnerable to Ukrainian drones and missiles. Recently, Agents of the Atesh partisan movement burned down a communications tower belonging to an air defense unit in the Moscow region. “Our agents carried out a successful sabotage operation in the Moscow region, striking an element of the air defense system of the 5th Air Defense Division, part of the Russian Air and Space Forces’ anti-aircraft missile forces. We destroyed the communications tower of the military unit,” the message says.
Atesh emphasized that this tower was a communication and control point for the Russian Armed Forces unit. It provided secure radio relay communication for the operational exchange of information and orders between the command and subordinate air defense units. The tower also housed radio-electronic reconnaissance and signal interception equipment, which is crucial for gathering information and maintaining overall control of the situation in the region.
