Years after the death of American financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was charged with child sex trafficking, US authorities continue to release materials from his case. A new set of FBI documents, released by the US Department of Justice on November 27, 2017, contains allegations of the financier’s possible ties to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. These documents refer to Epstein as Putin’s "wealth manager." The same document claims the financier provided similar services to former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe.
According to the published collection, Putin is mentioned in the documents 1,055 times, and the word "Russia" 5,876 times, the Agency notes . This collection includes various reports, correspondence, and analytical materials collected by American law enforcement agencies as part of investigations related to Epstein and his international contacts. The documents also contain email correspondence that suggests Epstein discussed the possibility of personal meetings with Putin or his entourage.
For example, in November 2010, when applying for a Russian visa, Epstein wrote: "I have a friend of Putin’s, should I ask him?" In August 2011, Epstein informed a businessman from the UAE about Putin’s possible visit to the United States and added that he would prefer to meet him there. The materials also mention the American financier’s correspondence with former Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland. In a conversation with Jagland in January 2014, he asked him to explain to Putin the need for a "more advanced version of Bitcoin." Epstein also wrote about his desire to meet with the Russian dictator in June 2018, and did not rule out the possibility of negotiations with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. It is unclear from the published materials whether the meetings between Epstein and Putin ultimately took place.
In 2008, Epstein pleaded guilty to organizing prostitution involving minors and entered into a plea bargain, receiving a relatively lenient sentence. In 2019, he was arrested again, this time on federal charges of child sex trafficking. In August 2019, the financier was found dead in a New York jail cell; his death was officially ruled a suicide. His closest accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell, was found guilty and sentenced to 20 years in prison. The Daily Mail had previously written about Epstein’s possible connection to Putin, analyzing published materials on the financier’s case. Many believe the financier may have acted as a middleman in one of the world’s largest blackmail operations.
They believe Epstein provided access to women, including from Russia, for influential figures in the global elite, which allowed them to create vulnerabilities for pressure and recruitment. The materials contain thousands of references to Moscow and individual documents that feature Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, including correspondence indicating possible contacts with him after Epstein’s conviction in 2008. Security sources note that this may partially explain Epstein’s disproportionately lavish lifestyle, which was inconsistent with his official career as a financier. They emphasize, however, that no direct documentary evidence of Putin’s or Russian intelligence agencies’ personal involvement in Epstein’s criminal activities has been presented. However, it is claimed that US intelligence agencies have been monitoring his ties to Russia for many years. The released files also contain allegations implicating prominent global businessmen and politicians.
