North Korea staged a display of multiple rocket launchers outside the venue of the landmark congress of its ruling Workers’ Party, and leader Kim Jong Un took one for a spin, state media report.
According to Associated Press the event took place on Wednesday, state broadcaster KRT reported early Thursday. It’s common for North Korean media to report news a day or more after it happens.
Kim said that the ninth congress of the Workers’ Party "will make clear the next-stage plan and goal for strengthening the self-reliant defence capabilities," in a speech at the rocket launcher event, the Korean Central News Agency reported.
Video from KRT shows Kim standing by one of the rocket launcher vehicles, which is then shown driving around the congress venue, with what appears to be Kim getting out of the cabin the circuit.
All of these images have not been independently verified. North Korean state media have shown Kim in other military contexts, taking up weapons and using other hardware.
Wednesday’s multiple rocket launcher event took place outside the April 25th House of Culture, which was the venue for the last two congresses under Kim Jong Un’s rule.
Also Wednesday, Kim broke ground at a new section of housing construction, in a suburb of Pyongyang.
KRT video showed Kim shoveling earth for a moment with other officials, and then pushing a button for explosions that threw earth high into the air.
This kind of photo opportunity has frequently been held in recent years as Kim has tried to expand his capital, building tens of thousands of new apartments, according to official accounts.
Since Kim Jong Un took over control in North Korea after his father died in late 2011, he has overseen multiple construction projects in Pyongyang, as well as an expansion of his arsenal of weapons, including nuclear capable delivery systems.
North Korea analysts are waiting to see what the five-yearly congress meeting shows about domestic policy, defence plans, and relations with the rest of the world, including South Korea.
