Once parade of military power. Today scaled down by fear | Ukraine This Week

Russia’s Victory Day parade has long symbolized the Kremlin’s military power. However, after more than four years of war in Ukraine, this year’s event will reportedly be scaled down amid growing security concerns and continued Ukrainian strikes deep inside Russia. Recording this episode of Ukraine This Week with less than a day to go before the Moscow parade, we discussed whether President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would respond to Putin’s celebrations with further attacks on Russian military or energy infrastructure, especially after warning that continued Russian assaults would be met with proportional retaliation, signaling an escalation in tit-for-tat strikes.

Volodymyr Dubovyk argued that Ukraine should avoid striking Red Square or the parade itself because it could damage international support for Kyiv and hand Russia a propaganda victory. He said that Ukraine’s recent drone attacks on oil refineries and other strategic targets demonstrate the effectiveness of Kyiv’s asymmetric warfare strategy while exposing Russia’s vulnerabilities and undermining its image of strength and control.
