The Ukrainian Navy on Thursday eliminated Russian Kamov Ka‑27 anti-submarine helicopters on a Russian drilling platform in the Black Sea as well as a large number of Russian troops. Video footage released in social media captures moments of the strikes at the helicopter, followed by powerful explosions. “The forces and assets of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, jointly with units of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, destroyed enemy units located on the drilling platform ‘Sivash’ overnight March 5,” the Ukrainian Navy said in a statement. According to the statement, the platform had been used by Russian troops as an observation post, a communications relay point, and a site for electronic warfare equipment and short-range air defense systems. It was also used to control strike UAVs aimed at destroying infrastructure in the Odesa region and Mykolaiv region and posed a threat to civilian shipping. The Ukrainian Navy added that Russia suffered “significant losses in personnel” as well. The Ka-27 anti-submarine helicopter is built to locate, monitor, and engage submarines operating at depths of up to 500 meters and speeds of up to 75 km/h. It can carry out missions within 200 km of its base ship, functioning effectively in sea states up to level 5, both day and night, and in favourable as well as challenging weather conditions. The helicopter is capable of carrying out tactical missions either independently or as part of a group, and can coordinate with naval ships at any geographic latitude. It is able to operate from coastal air bases as well as from ship decks at sea. It’s worth noting that another Ka-27 helicopter was shot down in the Russian-annexed Crimea Peninsula in February.
