On December 15, the Security Service of Ukraine reported a special operation in the port of Novorossiysk, which resulted in the destruction of a Russian submarine carrying Kalibr cruise missiles. The Ukrainian intelligence service claims that Sub Sea Baby underwater drones destroyed the 636.3-class submarine Varshavyanka, causing critical damage to the submarine and effectively disabling it. The submarine carried four launchers for Kalibr cruise missiles, which the Russian navy uses to strike Ukraine, the intelligence service noted.
This was a joint operation of the 13th Main Directorate of Military Counterintelligence of the SBU and the Ukrainian Navy.
The SBU reported that the cost of the Varshavyanka-class submarine is approximately $400 million. A Crimean military expert, a former Ukrainian officer and a lieutenant colonel in the Ukrainian Armed Forces reserve, shared his opinion with Krym.Realii on condition of anonymity that the destruction of the submarine in Novorossiysk is of crucial importance for the further course of the war at sea. On August 28, as a result of a joint operation between the Active Operations Department of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and the special unit of the Main Intelligence Directorate "Ghosts" in the Sea of Azov near annexed Crimea, a small missile ship of Project 21631 "Buyan-M", which carries Kalibr cruise missiles, was hit. "Fighters from the Prizraki special forces unit of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine damaged a ship’s radar with an aerial drone strike, while special forces from the Active Operations Department of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine attacked a Kalibr missile carrier. As a result of the strikes, the Russian missile ship, which was in the potential Kalibr missile launch zone in Temryuk Bay, was damaged and forced to abandon its combat duty area," the Main Intelligence Directorate reported, releasing footage of the ship’s destruction.
On the night of November 25, members of the Security Service of Ukraine’s Alpha Special Operations Center, along with the Security and Defense Forces, used long-range drones to strike several military and logistics facilities at the Novorossiysk seaport in Russia’s Krasnodar Krai, an informed source in the SBU told Radio Liberty. "According to preliminary data, a large Project 1171 landing ship, which was moored at the naval base, was damaged," said a source who wished to remain anonymous because he was not authorized to officially comment on the situation. In November and December, several tankers, considered part of Russia’s "shadow fleet" transporting oil products, were attacked and damaged by naval drones in the Black Sea.
