Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on Friday reiterated his claim that Ukraine had placed his country under an "oil blockade" and accused President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of "lying" over the extent of damage affecting a key pipeline. "They are not yet attacking people or our cities, but our economy. After all, if there is no oil flowing through the Druzhba pipeline, it will lead to economic chaos,” Orbán said, as tensions between Budapest and Kyiv escalated over the disruption of the transit of Russian oil. According to Associated Press the flow of oil via the Druzhba pipeline to Hungary and Slovakia has been interrupted since Jan. 27, with Ukrainian officials saying Russian drone attacks damaged the pipeline, which carries Russian crude across Ukrainian territory into Central Europe. "Western Europeans do not know Ukrainians. They believe what Zelenskyy says. It is an obvious lie that technical reasons are preventing oil deliveries,” Orbán insisted in comments for Hungary’s state broadcaster on Friday. Hungary’s nationalist government, led by Orbán, has repeatedly accused Ukraine of "blackmail" to force Budapest to give up its anti-Ukrainian positions, and of seeking to drive up energy prices in Hungary less than two months before a pivotal election. On Sunday, Hungary threatened to block a major, 90-billion euro European Union loan for Kyiv, and vetoed a new round of EU sanctions against Russia on Monday. The prime minister, the friendliest leader towards Russia in the European trade bloc, has vowed to block any other EU measures to assist Ukraine until oil shipments resume. Nearly every country in Europe has significantly reduced or entirely ceased Russian energy imports since Moscow launched its war in Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022.
Yet Hungary and Slovakia, both EU and NATO members, have maintained and even increased supplies of Russian oil and gas, and received a temporary exemption from an EU policy prohibiting imports of Russian oil.
