Poland celebrates “Wet Monday” with water splashing tradition

Wet Monday, also known as Śmigus-Dyngus, is a Polish Easter tradition in which people splash each other with water to celebrate the arrival of spring.

Rooted in pre-Christian rituals of purification and renewal, it later became part of Easter celebrations and symbolized health, luck and fertility for the coming year.

Today, the custom ranges from lighthearted splashing among friends to larger public events. In many towns, volunteer firefighters join in using fire hoses, turning the tradition into a community spectacle while promoting local engagement.

Although widely enjoyed, authorities stress that the fun should stay within reason, as excessive or disruptive behavior can still lead to fines.

Have you ever taken part in this tradition?
