Poland’s FM on Ukraine and NATO’s changing role | Radosław Sikorski

Poland’s Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski commented on the speech delivered by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, expressing surprise that the war in Ukraine, the largest conflict in Europe since World War II, was not explicitly mentioned. He noted that Ukraine had been discussed in earlier bilateral talks with Rubio and emphasized that NATO is likely to evolve into a different kind of alliance in the future. Sikorski said Europe is awaiting a U.S. proposal on a new division of responsibilities within NATO, which would allow allies to plan the next phase of cooperation and potentially sustain the alliance for decades.

He argued that Europe is significantly stronger economically than it was in the 1950s and should be capable of deterring Russia with limited American support. Sikorski also pointed to the limited effectiveness of the United Nations, given that one of the permanent members of the Security Council is directly involved in the conflict. He expressed skepticism about initiatives that do not address Russia’s unwillingness to withdraw from Ukraine and stressed that Ukraine must be able to negotiate from a position of strength, and not held under pressure toward a semi‑capitulation.
