After four years of war in Ukraine, traditional artillery and tanks have faded into the background. Drones dominate the battlefield , and, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, they account for 80% of Russian forces’ daily losses, The Telegraph reports. "Drones have transformed the front into rapidly expanding ‘kill zones,’ where being in the open is tantamount to a death sentence for a soldier," Zelensky noted. At the beginning of the war, the Aerorazvedka unit, comprised of IT specialists and volunteers, played a key role. They helped stop a column of Russian tanks near Kyiv and prevent the capture of Gostomel Airport. "We used drones equipped with thermal imaging to drop 1.5kg bombs on an enemy column," said an Australian volunteer, "Chaplain," from the 3rd Army Corps.
FPV drones, initially amateur ones, quickly evolved into high-precision machines for destroying manpower and armored vehicles.
By the summer of 2023, Ukraine was losing up to 10,000 drones per month, including reconnaissance UAVs and disposable "kamikaze" drones. However, despite the heavy losses, FPV drones were destroying tanks and armored vehicles valued at millions of dollars. Drone production has increased: in 2024, Ukraine manufactured over two million UAVs, including modifications for increased payload and flight endurance. Chaplain says:
"The most important thing is to simply not be noticed. If they notice you, they will hunt you." Ukraine’s drones have evolved to use artificial intelligence, fiber-optic communications, and automated targeting to evade enemy jammers. Saker Scout drones can independently acquire a target if contact with the pilot is lost. Fiber optic drones remain resistant to radio interference, and Russia has also begun to scale up the technology.
"Until we figure out how to jam fiber-optic drones, we’re just going to keep getting hit," said military expert Chaplain. FPV drones force soldiers to move slowly, hide, and use improvised cover. "I was transporting a wounded friend, and it took us six hours to cover about 800 meters. We crawled, hid, and sat under trees," recalls Kaplain. At the same time, Western forces are beginning to adapt to the use of drones, but their effectiveness in NATO has not yet become fully integrated into tactics. Thousands of precision drones, often costing only several hundred dollars apiece, roam the skies daily across an expanding "kill zone" along the 1,200-km front. They are joined by a growing range of more powerful drones capable of flying farther and carrying heavier payloads. The ever-present threat from the sky makes virtually any movement – from troop rotations and evacuations to tank assaults – increasingly deadly. Drone-inflicted casualties have jumped from less than 10 per cent of the total in 2022 to up to 80 per cent last year, as much of the war has morphed into an "air battle of mutual denial", according to a report by the French Institute of International Relations published this month.
