Ukraine’s intelligence agencies have confirmed a successful deep strike inside Russian territory, destroying an Oreshnik long-range ballistic missile once hailed as one of the Kremlin’s most advanced weapons. The revelation came during an October 31, 2025 briefing, with President Zelenskyy and SBU chief Vasyl Malyuk revealing that the attack occurred over a year earlier, on July 8, 2024. The missile was hit at the Kapustin Yar launch site in Russia’s Astrakhan region, roughly 250 miles from the Ukrainian border.
The joint operation between Ukraine’s SBU, GUR, and SZRU dealt a major blow to Moscow’s defense ambitions, targeting one of its newest IRBMs—reportedly capable of Mach 10 speeds and multiple warhead deployment. Russia has only been able to produce up to six of these missiles per year, according to Ukrainian intelligence. This strike marks another successful covert mission showing that no point within Russia is beyond Ukraine’s reach.
