The Russian air force, once thought to be a dominant force, is facing a severe crisis as Ukraine’s strike rate proves unbelievably effective. Since February 2022, the start of the conflict, Ukraine has reportedly destroyed a staggering number of Russian aircraft. On June 3, 2025, United 24 Media reported that Ukraine’s General Staff updated the official count to 384 Russian planes lost. This includes 12 destroyed on June 3 alone, alongside hundreds of helicopters, thousands of drones, and cruise missiles.
The devastating "Operation Spiderweb" on June 1, 2025, saw Ukraine’s innovative use of drones to strike key Russian airbases, including Olenya and Belaya. This operation resulted in significant losses, including strategic cruise missile carriers and A-50 aircraft. Further strikes in June continue to erode Russia’s air capabilities; a Russian Su-35 fighter jet was taken out on June 8, 2025, and a MiG-31 carrier was destroyed in an attack on Savasleyka airbase on June 9, 2025. As of June 10, 2025, Ukraine’s Ministry of Finance claims the total loss of Russian aircraft has reached 416.
